Principles of Unity

Blackbird Infoshop is a collectively-run anarchist and anti-capitalist community space operating on unceded Munsee and Muhhicanneok Territories in so-called Kingston, NY.

PRINCIPLES OF UNITY

  • Blackbird Infoshop opposes capitalism, colonialism, and the state, and strives to create living alternatives to capital and state power by practicing consensus, engaging in direct democracy, and building collective autonomy.
  • Blackbird stands with Indigenous struggles for sovereignty and liberation on Turtle Island and globally. We support the liberation struggles of displaced/colonized/oppressed peoples around the globe, including but not limited to the Munsee, the Muhhicanneok, the African diasporas in the Americas, the Palestinians, the Rojava Revolution, and the Zapatistas.
  • Blackbird is a space committed to living alternatives to capitalism – we strive to be a free and accessible space for collective education, studying theory, and developing praxis. We offer a free lending library, reading groups, a community free fridge, and a free space for aligned community organizations to meet and hold events.
  • We oppose all structures of discrimination and domination based on race, colonialism, gender, gender identity, immigration status, religion, ableism, age, and sexual orientation.
  • Blackbird stands in solidarity with all persons incarcerated and enslaved by all states and supports the abolition of all prisons, policing, and forced labor.
  • We believe that no human being is illegal or disposable. We do not call the police. We are committed to addressing and repairing harm, violence, and abuse outside of state systems of violence.
  • Blackbird is committed to fostering an ecology of freedom, to building relationships to land and community that acknowledge our radical interconnectedness. We work to support Indigenous sovereignty and community autonomy as living alternatives to capitalism and colonialism.
  • We are committed to creating conceptual and material accessibility, including but not limited to: ensuring the space is beyond ADA compliant and establishing and maintaining the Blackbird Safer Air / Covid Agreements. (Found in the space and online at blackbirdinfoshop.com/safer_air_covid_agreements)
  • We admit the constraints of life under capitalism often demand compromises for survival. We commit to generating revenue for our labor and overhead costs through a diversity of tactics including but not limited to: direct fundraising, donations, retail sales of books and coffee, events and space rental, and subscription-based commerce.

All persons and organizations
wishing to use the space agree to:

  • Ensure their event or gathering aligns with our Principles of Unity.
  • Materially contribute to the overhead of the space if their event or gathering generates revenue. The suggested and sliding-scale fee for space use is $0-100/hour.
